For 1931 Calthorpe Motor Cycle Co produced a 350cc motorcycle called the Ivory. A lovely looking machine, perhaps because I have always thought that there was something quite special about a sloper engine motorcycle, the sporty lines of the incline engine which seems to change the complete look of the whole design of the machine. BSA, Royal Enfield, Calthorpe, and Ariel, were just some of the manufactures that went through the sloper design phase in the early 1930s, with the majority reverting back to vertical designs by 1935. It was a shame because the sporty lines, teardrop shape fuel tanks, big fishtail mufflers with 2 port exhaust systems seemed to make this style of machine standout, even today. Others may think differently.
Calthorpes 1929 model, and the vast change to the really handsome 1930 model.
This brochure has been made up from various scans of the original which was a wall poster, so some of the sizing is varied but the information within is well worth a look, especially the images on page 6.
